The number of Russian refugees in the West has always been small, and they were mostly residents of Chechnya, political activists or members of the LGBTQ+ community. In 2022, however, asylum requests from Russians more than doubled in the EU and increased almost 50-fold in the US, and most of them flee their country as they oppose the war, or they are deserters and potential soldiers seeking to avoid military enlistment.
