Lots of great improvements. But as long as there is no desktop client they can improve talk as much as they want. Most companies will require a desktop client for their chat solution.
They should have used xmpp or something that let’s you connect with an external client. Would have been much less work to implement (I assume) as they would basically be integrating xmpp into nextcloud instead of writing their whole chat back end in house.
IIRC the nextcloud talk is based on XMPP, though unfortunately not (yet) fully compatible to external client’s
Sadly this is not true. early in the development there were discussions about using the JSXC addon (XMPP client) and developing that further, but in the end Nextcloud decided to form a joint venture with the Spreed Ag and base their NC-Talk on that. And this custom solution it not using any standard like XMPP.
edit: you might be thinking of Jitsi Meet. But sadly that is becoming less, not more compatible with XMPP lately.
The design looks a lot better imo, although is still a bit too “rounded” for my taste.
And I’m excited about the performance improvements and the new photo app.
