Using Reddit for years , I had come to Lemmy.

I would like to know the difference between Reddit vs Lemmy.

Like, what features Lemmy has that Reddit don’t? Does Lemmy have some features missing that already exist on Reddit?

And finally: have you heard of Libreddit yet? It has LOTS of themes, unlike Reddit, including Dracula and others.

If you’ll please tell me how can I have Dracula theme in Lemmy, I would appreciate it!

Thanks in advance,

Sincerely,

Yours,

Expert Plus

P.S. BTW, why Lemmy’s UI isn’t so look professional? I mean, it looks like Reddit’s old UI, and as for me, it’s suck, so can I have a better UI please? If so, how? Lemmy’s lite version seems to be deprecated and i didn’t find any Lemmy web apps that would be better for me. If you know one, please tell me it! Name it!

    Lemmy vs reddit

    Federation

The biggest difference is (and will likely always be) that LemmyNet instances are federated using activity pub. This means that posts, content and comments are shared across different activity pub instances.

For example I have seen your post and am commenting from the beehaw instance even though you are using the Lemmy.ml instance.

Lemmy is able to federate with mastodon and pleroma so you will see comments from there occasionally too.

The main benefit of this (IMO) is that users don’t get locked in to a website (e.g. facebook, Instagram, reddit) where they will lose content if they leave.

    UI

You can change your theme in settings, but there is not a huge amount of variety, mainly it is colour changes.

The lemmy front end is seperate to the back end so it would be possible to create a more reddit like front end if you wanted to. For example nutomic has creates a bulletin board - like front end for Lemmy that looks like this:

There is an android app for Lemmy called jerboa that has a more reddit like UI that you might want to check out (you can find it on f-droid or the play store).

    other differences

Text posts and comments on Lemmy are just markdown so you can do things like embed images (as you can see above).

    Edit:

Other differences worth mentioning is the difference in content. Lemmy has less content than reddit although I think there is a sustainable number of users currently. More users will join soon when hexbear (a site that uses fork of an older version of Lemmy) migrates to join Lemmy net. It is also likely that some people will migrate from reddit when reddit ipo’s.

      Thanks for response :-)

For example nutomic has creates a bulletin board - like front end for Lemmy that looks like this:

      The UI definitely 100% sucks!

You can change your theme in settings, but there is not a huge amount of variety, mainly it is colour changes.

Would you like to tell me how can I have Dracula theme specifically?

      Thanks in advance,

      Sincerely,

P.S. BTW, I saw your response on Mastodon and it seems to be don’t support embed images via Markdown from Lemmy’s post at all:

I’m not really sure, the people who run your instance would need to add it. You could run your own instance and add it yourself (this repo has some examples of custom ui themes: https://github.com/2xx04/lemmy-ui-themes).

P.S. BTW, I saw your response on Mastodon and it seems to be don’t support embed images via Markdown from Lemmy’s

Yes federation with mastodon/pleroma isn’t perfect right now. I believe the devs are working on it.

          ok, got it :-)

Does your instance has Dracula theme in it?

I think it just has the same themes as Lemmy.ml

One thing that might work is if you have an android phone with Dracula theme and use the jerboa app.

Jerboa should pick up the colour scheme from your phone (at least it does for me)

I feel the opposite regarding the UI. Lemmy UI is clean and easy to follow, Reddit redesign is a giant mess. It’s bloated and flashy, but not at all ergonomic in my opinion. I find threads are much harder to scan through.

I find old reddit is fugly, but at least it’s functional. New reddit design is just too busy for my liking.

        @Daryl76679 SO…

Can you please re-read what did you just said?

You like Lemmy’s design and hates Old Reddit’s design?

I dislike them both, including Reddit’s new UI.

There is an Reddit app, called Troddit, and I’m proud to say that I enjoy Troddit’s Ui and functionality :-)

I generally like Lemmy’s design, with one exception. There is no formally structured recognition of rules for a community. There’s just a blob of text that the community moderators have to somehow structure in a visually appealing way. Because there is no recognition of rules, the reporting dialog box does not allow for simply selecting in a drop down, since there is nothing to select from.

JESUS CHRIST, GOD how can people prefer an OLD, UNSTABLE UI!!!

Reddit redesign is a giant mess

Okay, visit old.reddit.com . Are you happy now???

There really isn’t enough content on Lemmy. That’s the main issue, no amount of extra features will help Lemmy since it’s just a social media like any other. You need a good reason to switch and atm there is no reason I would switch to Lemmy full time.

There are definitely political mods. Many instances are explicitly political in nature.

I mean, I ban whole instances from the lemmy instance I run.

I think the things you’re seeing are issues of size and scale rather than inherent differences between the platforms

Right, but what I’m saying is that as an instance admin, I can and do block other instances for the reasons you outline. If someone posts in a hate sub, they’re getting banned from my instance. If an instance is explicitly right wing, it’s getting defederated from my instance. If someone does "what about"ism or otherwise excuses transphobia, racism, sexism or the like, they’re getting banned from my instance.

I’m explicitly biased towards communities and people that align with my beliefs, and will happily ban anyone that is actively opposed to them. I have zero interest in “free speech” as a guiding policy that I should be aiming for.

Which is to say, I am many of the things you say reddit is, but lemmy isn’t, and yet here I am on lemmy.

The difference is federation vs centralisation. On reddit, if you don’t like it, you’re out of luck. On lemmy, if you don’t like an instance, you can find another or even create your own. But both of those versions can and do have humans with bias pushing ban buttons

The thing is, the wider Fediverse works the way you describe, with imported defederation lists etc.

Most people setting up new Mastodon instances start with a standard block list with all of the usual suspects on it.

This is the future of Lemmy too as it gets bigger and as integration with non Lemmy instance becomes more common.

                  Context matters.

I agree. And I think that’s the difference. Fundamentally, Lemmy isn’t that much different to Reddit, in so far as all of the issues you highlight there exist here too.

                  The only difference is context.

Reddit gives me more what I want to know than Lemmy: tor onion service, linux, and etc. But Reddit has too many posts to see. Less posts in lemmy rather let me feel good in some cases.

By the way, I was banned on Lemmy.ml after I was sarcastic about communists. You mad? Did I need to give you Rubles or the like to keep my account? I enjoyed these interactions. Reddit can’t give me this joy! :D

@erioque lmao Lemmy is just full of these enlightened people. Why do you think they are so great fans of the Mali TLD?

Also, let me quickly show you a way to get your content downvoted around this place:

Slava Ukraina! Zelensky is the best leader, may he defend the sovereign and democratic nation of Ukraine until the final victory over the RuZZian orcs. Ukraine will win. Crimea is Ukraine. Donbass is Ukraine. Death to Putler and all the soldiers in the RuZZian Army!
