Preliminary data finds deforestation in the month of March increased 14 percent over the same month last year.

This isn’t surprising. In the end, Lula is fighting an uphill battle against powerful economic incentives. He needs all the help he can get, including from foreign backers who can bankroll alternative income sources for those who would otherwise deforest.
