Just want to add a quick comment to say that lots of people have said very nice things about lemmy.zip in the giveaway thread. I can’t reply in there because then I’d enter the giveaway and obviously don’t want to do that (didn’t think through that eventuality did I!) So just wanted to say thank you to everyone for that. It’s very touching.

It doesn’t increase your chances of winning though so you can say mean things if you want 😉

  • Still can’t really hold them liable unless they deliberately sold a weapon to someone who legally was prohibited from having a weapon.

That’s a very American point of view though - America isn’t holding those who create/sell tools that do bad things to account. If gun manufacturers were held responsible for how the things they created were used, you can bet anything suddenly they’d be hell of lot safer. Which is the exact same point about AI.

(Obviously not holding manufacturers/sellers to account is not an America-only issue, but this article is about AI and the USA so that’s the example I’m using.)

The bigger question is why did someone feel the need to kill others?

As a non-American, I think the general question is why on earth does the general public need semi-automatic weapons. Or really, any weapons.

  • Thank you!

I’ve looked in the DB and as far as i can tell, they triple posted. Each one has a unique AP_id which means that each of those comments was most likely created on the host instance (lemmy.ml) then sent to us an activity, rather than being federated incorrectly. Always happy to check other examples though, i know there has been an issue with lemmy.world duplicating all their activities for some reason (although thankfully it didnt mean we had 2 of everything!)

I think I’ve narrowed down that particular issue, in relation to UTC.

    • You put: -h 15:05
    • Zippy Replied: Time (UTC): 15:05
    • And then scheduled the post for 14:05:00+00:00

Which is because UTC is an hour behind UK time which is the timezone that was set. Which is now UTC as it should’ve been!
