I have known about this situation since about August from 338canada.com. Look at this BS in BC: https://338canada.com/bc.htm. 44% of expected combined opposition votes for 16% seats, vs. 47% votes for 84% of the province’s federal seats.

It’s also been discussed at the Tyee https://thetyee.ca/Analysis/2024/12/03/Poilievre-Free-Ride-Power/

It’s another situation where very little of the media is casting any judgement to Mr. Whiny, and Trudeau is being blamed for everything from unpleasant weather (not related to the climate crisis) to waking up on the wrong side of the bed. No one is discussing or questioning Poilievre whether he is ready to deal with Trump, which a good portion of his base wants him to walk over Canada.

Vote splitting, an unenthused electorate are factors pointing to an amazing opportunity for politically myopic Conservatives to come in and wreck our country. We are already preparing the transition power despite the election not even having started.

I honestly think Trudeau should stop giving a fuck, put on KISS makeup, break the silly quibbling that the House is doing by releasing goddamn everything, put in any form of non FPTP system that is even slightly improved, and just go out like the rock star he deserves to be.

  • I think this was known to be the gameplan beforehand for Bluesky so this isn’t a trick, bait and switch or anything like that. I think it can be reasonable to support the network and infrastructure with subscriptions. However, there are no guarantees as to what the subscription would provide or that the rates will not increase randomly without warning. So long as BlueSky users know that.

A Donation-based model might net less, but it will be centered around what people can pay.

  • I’m very familiar with a lot of things Toronto. It has the propensity to be way bigger and better than it is, but is it held back by the pervasive feeling that it is big and good enough. So I agree with the author even if it sounds like he is contradicting himself at times.

One thing I have heard is that there is less of an “angel investor” mentality here than in Silicon Valley, investors aren’t willing to dump money in the most longshot of ideas here, and are much more risk averse. It does mean there are fewer extremely dumb projects getting crazy amounts of funding but it also means that potentially groundbreaking ideas could also be stifled.

  • Are you in BC? Even if not, you can find out at this BuyBC Gov site what food is in season, so that you are most likely to be able to find locally produced foods. Other provinces probably have similar sites and campaign pages.

For general products like furniture, they exist, you just have to search for them, for example start with “Canadian Hardwood table” as a search, then you can vet a site and its products whether they are based in Canada (cross-reference with a mapping tool).

Be aware there are some things, like microelectronic components are produced so much cheaper overseas that you will not be able to find anything produced domestically off-the-shelf for less than 10x the price from China, so you may have to live with some parts coming from elsewhere but sold, designed or assembled locally.

Go and visit your local smaller retailers, try to search up stores that sell the mind of thing you are looking for. Note that you should check google reviews that they are actually the retail business you are looking for and not just a corporate office if you will visit. Also note that in some areas of Toronto and Vancouver you may have trouble finding information in English about stores, as there is a concentration of services tailored toward a population speaking another language.
