Adding that both things need to happen for the country to reverse the rightward shift. More liberals need to vote, AND the party needs to recognize, or be shown in primary elections, that they can publicly embrace more liberal stances. On or the other and we wind up with the status quo.

  • You’re not at all wrong, except democrats absolutely do have to worry about moderates at the moment. A large portion of the GOP base is retired people who definitely will vote. After that are Trump diehards who also definitely will vote. Look at the last election. Biden is about as centrist as they come, and Trump still racked up record breaking support at the polls!

You’re right that Bernie whipped up a lot of excitement, but he also lost that primary. And others who have tried to do something similar (like Beto) have also come up short.

I think someone else said this, or maybe it was a comment on another post, but republicans took over 40-years to shift the country right and overturn Roe. Countering that won’t happen overnight, and probably has the best chance at succeeding if it’s done within the current political landscape.

You’re absolutely right about the current Democratic Party, but that party’s been pulled to the right by moderates and former moderate republicans. If the country really is more liberal than our representation would indicate, as put forth by the meme, then a more progressive voting populace will eventually result in more progressive liberal party. Right now everything is skewed to the right because of the oversized influence of moderates and moderate conservatives who don’t want to vote for fascism.

Just read a good article today about FEMA response. They said all response starts at the local level. At some level, there might be a FEMA rep involved, but the local or state leaders have to request the help. Even then, FEMA doesn’t run the show. It’s run by the state and local people with FEMA assisting to provide needed resources and guidance. Unfortunately, I can’t remember where I read the article.

IIRC, the camps of those days were after the fact for people who had lost their homes riding out the storms.

It works the same way the Republicans have been steered further right while not in power. When Democrats have to worry about moderates, they move to the right. If they only have to worry about liberals, they can support and back more progressive positions. If they don’t, they are more likely to be primaried.

See also: the Tea Party takeover of the GOP which pushed them further down the path to the current fascism.

Yeah, same. I’ve always considered the “Apple tax” part of the price you pay for them not rampantly monetizing your data like their competitors do. I’m not saying Apple is perfect or anything, but I’m slightly more comfortable paying for their services than Google, MS, or Amazon. I also agree that they’ve lost a lot of the “flair” since Jobs and Ive died/left (Apple Orchard would’ve been a much better name, esp. considering what the Valley was before tech took over), but that was inevitable.

That said, when I find out different, I’m gone.

  • This is just like all those times Republican candidates hedged about Roe v Wade… right up until they finally got it overturned. Sure, the majority of voters agree the EC is outdated and needs to go; but saying as much can scare moderates, and doesn’t get you any new liberal voters. Never forget, “undecided” voters in the US are just fickle assholes who don’t want to vote for someone who “feels” too conservative or liberal. Unfortunately, with FPTP voting, they carry a lot of weight.

  • A couple of things to understand about professional sex workers:

First, they are professionals. They understand that people need something from them that they don’t get in the world. Their job is to find a way to provide that, within reason. Many are quite good at it. You’d be surprised.

Second, there’s a reason it’s known as the world’s oldest profession. I remember an old joke about a guy ranting about the moral sin of masturbation, and someone saying, “Let he among you with a free hand cast the first stone!” Seriously, it’s an industry that’s survived wars, famine, depressions, and everything in between. It’s always had plenty of customers in the worst of times. There’s no shame.

Finally, you want to identify whether you’re asking about a sex act or making love. Physically, they’re very similar, but emotionally they couldn’t be more different. If all you want to feel is the act, go to a decent escort or buy a flesh-light. If you want the emotional attachment, that takes some work. The good news is if you find it, the awkwardness of the sex act won’t matter. It will be overshadowed by your feelings for one another.
