Don’t you visit your parents often enough that it autoconnects?
I am guessing the idea is other people that do not come often but come for Thanksgiving will not have the WiFi setup or new devices, etc. and when they are there they might ask for it to which the father will have to search for the paper. If yourself ask for it now, he might have the paper ready then 😂.
That said… nowadays you can share your password from your own phone QR or the old way if you have it stored in text and showing it on your phone or directly sent it to them in a message (security aside in this case…)
I wanted to change my parents’ wifi password to something everyone in the family would remember instead of the random default gibberish password.
My dad said no because it took the Comcast guy a long time to set up, so I’d probably mess up the work he did… I had worked in IT for 7 years at that point.
Okay so I will follow that logic and will only stay a length of time that is shorter than how long the cable guy was here.
I can relate. I’ve got like a hundred devices that connect to my wifi, so if someone suggested changing the Wi-Fi password I’d punch em in the crotch. But yeah… Doubt your dad is doing that.
Tbh QR code or WPS seem like better options than an easy password
I went to my wife’s grandmother’s for Thanksgiving and the poor lady didn’t realize she had wifi. Her computer had a button that says internet, and a few big buttons on the homepage like “family photos” and “weather”.
The scary part, her phone was connected to wifi of a random neighbor. Had to shut that down real quick.
I remember back in college I moved into an office campus apartment with a few people. They had moved in before me since they lived closer. Two weeks later when I moved in I asked “what’s the WiFi password?” and she said “we don’t have WiFi… We just plug directly into the modem.” There were four people in the apartment 🤦♂️🤦♂️
This was also the same girl that accused me of breaking her laptop by connecting it to our WiFi later on because it wouldn’t connect to WiFi at her mom’s house anymore.

Did they mean a combo router/modem without wifi (either because it wasn’t set up or because it didn’t have the hardware) or a modem with a single port that each person took a turn with when they needed internet?
Both! It was the AIO deal provided by the ISP but they never set anything up so whenever they needed internet they just plugged their laptop into the WAN port.

My dad asks me for passwords to accounts he regularly accesses (but has stored) even though I set it up once years ago. Yeah dad, I totally remember that string of words I chose once 4 years back and then never used again.
I made my parents and grandparents a QR code with the WiFi information on it, it’s printed out and laminated. Shit works so well.
Most android phones can display that qr code.

You can find the password on any device already connected. The instructions for finding it can be googled for whatever device you have.
Every visiting family member resets the router/password on every visit. Inefficient, but it’s become a tradition as true as Thanksgiving itself.
I set everything up at my parents house so I know all the info.
Just set it to 11111111. Problem solved.
My dad just re-did the wifi mesh network at my parent’s house, so that one might fall flat.
I thought it usually is written at the bottom of the router. At least if it is the default, which it likely would be.
If you’re using default credentials for your router, there’s a good chance others are also using them. Including the administration credentials. If the defaults are set up for convenience instead of security, someone else could even potentially flash their own firmware on there, which essentially means it has become their router.

A random dad isn’t going to change the administrator password. You’re lucky if they’re changing anything from the defaults but definitely not the configuration credentials.
But I was talking about the wifi password.

I dont think i have ever seen someone need more than 5 minutes to find the router password
