Yeah, I get a “land acknowledgement” but that sounds like you’re tryna take a shit on the town.
It’s also muddling the issues at hand with some irrelevant issue they have with the town.

In this context, when someone says “so called place” it is a shortened way of acknowledging that the land they are referring to wasn’t always called that, that native folks have their own names for it. It’s seen as a respectful gesture.
