so you’re saying Reddit peaked in 2019 and has been downhill ever since regardless of API shenanigans?

Reddit has always been a mixed bag for me personally. I hate the communities and the dreary outlook it seeks to cultivate but its a great tool for finding interesting videos and memes.

It all depends on the subs you interacted with.

If you allowed the defaults, news and politics to show up?

It has been a shit hole for at least a decade.

If you only viewed things like askhistorians and other focused and tightly moderated subs?

The place it still pretty good.

Since the Reddit third party API change, I only (and I mean only) use Reddit for porn. Not checking the ‘frontpage’, straight to the porn subreddits (within the browser ofc).

Part of the reason I left Reddit was all the onlyfans thots. I’m not here to see tits. My wife has spectacular tits that I get to play with. I’m here to read interesting shit.

Well that graph shows total posts and SFW posts have declined massively. NSFW posts have grown but the impact will be disproportionately noticable as the aite is basically in decline otherwise.

That’s all assuming AskReddit is representative of the site as a whole.

I mean, that’s been noticed and parodied on reddit itself

    Ask reddit sex

Hey reddit , do you like sex? Sexy sexy sex? Do you like when you put penis in women cum hole and do the sex? What is your sexiest sex you’ve ever sexed ? Is it the ass one (an#a l) or the v#gina one?

    https://old.reddit.com/r/copypasta/comments/hczxl2/ask_reddit_sex/

I think the literally teenage userbase of the site has grown significantly in the last few years, which results in this sort of garbage.

To be frank, a lot of Reddit’s “getting hornier” are teens and young adults with autism who have the idea that “haha gay/transgender” qualifies as a meme to be posted everywhere and get showered with karma.

Thankfully there’s a lot less of that here. (The consistent bent toward politics, though, did carry over without any decrease unfortunately)

And that is despite reddit banning a ton of NSFW subreddits over the past few years (or setting them to private).

thats probably why this spike is happening.

All sorts of websites are trying to puritan it up by scrubbing away porn and any other ad unfriendly appearances, like youtube with their swear jar.

So when it gets harder to find porn, people start posting more and more about porn in sfw ish subs like askreddit

Weren’t there changes to how NSFW was applied? I remember seeing an increasing amount of erroneously applied NSFW tags in major subs.

The data seems to indicate that the number of NSFW posts didn’t increase over time, but rather that the number of SFW posts decreased over time. I think the data suggests an interpretation that is vastly more interesting than simply that Reddit got hornier. It looks like something happened that discouraged people from posting SFW questions. Mod change? Rule change? Demographic change? I don’t know
