I just blocked cats. I like cats. But there’s a gazillion of cats on my feed all of a sudden.

    Cats.

I’m the same. I also block individuals who post the same thing in like 6 different subs. Yes those posts can tech ically belong in 6 different subs, but if I see more then 2 I just don’t care and it’s instant block from me.

Unlike subs where there’s one centralized “Technology” sub for example, here they’re spread out. There are at least 3 large and active “Technology” communities and so cross-posting to all is necessary. It’s the equivalent to posting to the single “Technology” sub on the shit site. Therefore multi-communitu cross-posting is the norm here.

I get why it’s done, just bothers me seeing the same thing like 4 times all back to back so I block em.

Absolutely. First thing I did when I discovered how to block communities. And I like cats too.

Thank you! Shitpost was the first one to go. If I never see another bean in my life it will be too soon.

I had to do that too. I don’t really hate it, but it’s like every other post on All. Annoying.

That’s my problem too. I don’t mind memes, shitposts, 196 generally. At least not until the beans. But collectively it feels like they take up 80% of All. I wish I could just reduce their frequency somehow.

Finally, no more beans 🫘 ☺️

E: We probably want a “Mute Community” option as well. One that removes that community’s content from All, but doesn’t remove access from the community if you search for it or go to it directly. That way we can look at 🫘 when we want to, yet not see them displacing everything else in All.

Is there a way to block an entire instance without having to manually block all of it’s communities?

I don’t want to disable NSFW in my user profile.

I do that instead of subscribing to communities.

So far I’ve mostly just blocked sports related communities. Also Apple.

It would be nice if you could block entire instances. I once had my feed fill up with a bunch of sports posts with exactly 0 activity on them.

For WefWef users there isn’t a block button, however, switch to Memmy or Mlem and block them through that and it will also block in WefWef. Just wanted to throw that out there.

Jerboa on Android has the option to block communities directly from the post on your feed. Just tap the three dots and block it. Lets you block furry porn without having to see any of it.

Is there any way to block an entire server that’s federated to the one you have an account on? I don’t want to individually block every single community.

No, your admin could defederate them but that effects everyone

A lot of people have requested this feature though, so it may come.

        Thanks for the response!

I think I might be done with lemmy until that’s introduced. I want to be a part of the midwest.social community on here, but I don’t want to block new porn communities every day as their volume of votes tends to dominate the feed.

And I don’t want to set it to subscribed communities only, because then I won’t find new communities I’ll actually enjoy and engage with. I think there’s a lot of potential with these federated communities, but it’s just not mature enough for user controls yet.

As an FYI you you go to your profile settings on your instance’s site, you can turn off NSFW and you won’t see any of that.

You could also sign up to an instance that blocks the porn one, and still participate in Midwest.social communities

It’s a decent bandaid, but I don’t want to block all NSFW content, I just want better controls around it so I’m not fighting an onslaught of creative new community names around anal whenever I open the site or an app.

I could indeed join another instance, but figuring out which instances are federated to which other instances is a bit of a slog from a user perspective unless there’s a big searchable graph available somewhere (which is entirely possible, I’m still very ignorant).

And who knows, maybe the apps will get better and be able to grab a local-only feed for each instance you have an account on and can patch together a feed from them all mixed together, and that would get me close to a workable solution for the long run.

I suppose you could also sit down and subscribe to every community you want. Then used the subscribed feed. Kinda kills discovery for new communities though
