This is super important, as is emphasising that “walkable” doesn’t mean “you must walk”. I have seen disability activists (of which I consider myself one) calling walkable cities ableist because they find the idea hostile to disabled people who struggle to walk or wheel themselves long distances.
Don’t get me wrong, it pissed me off to no end to hear that argument because I fucking hate cars and also car-centric cities are ALSO inherently ableist. But it was also a wake up call to me that we can diversify our outreach further.
According to some people, trying to decrease car traffic is being a reactionary because those poor proletarians needs their cars. They would use anything as a deflation.
Beside, examptions for handicapped people already exist in the code. Nobody is talking about scraping that out :)
