Car wash mode likely turns those sensors off to prevent damage to the wipers.

It’s an ego trip, status symbol, or virtue signal (pick up to 3) in the form of a vehicle. The part where it can propel itself and it’s occupants from place to place is, in fact, a bonus feature.
