I don’t understand this at all and maybe I’m missing something. If a child swallows a battery, and it’s inside their body, how would the battery turning a different color help anything?

Queue freaked out parents when their child had a blue sucker or ice pop.

Parents in the ER: “he has a blue tongue, we need a x-ray!”

Why can’t we just make batteries that auto shut off when they are shorted for a length of time? Like a fuse inside that disconnects the power? Couple that with tasting bitter and coated to not degrade in stomach acid. The batteries could just pass through.

“shorted” = battery is being used

Yes but they could have a heat activated fuse that gets tripped if the battery self heats from being shorted. Your smoke alarm battery never gets hot during use but if you connect the terminals together the battery gets super hot. Button batteries could implement a small self resetting thermostat/fuse with a bimetallic strip.

I think that’s harder than you might think for this application — there are a lot of small lights and toys which basically run a button battery all-out when turned on.

There could be a place for both types but use on slow drain devices that might be out of sight but children might still have access like window sensors could utilize the tech. They could even be sold with child safe in mind.

Definitely, though it would realistically look like slow-drain-only devices having a different size/shape to prevent confusion as people try to use them in devices which need more milliamps
