I get the joke. However, I just want to point out that in the later series, red signified command and someone important. When I wear my Commandar Riker costume, I don’t appreciate the comments about the red shirt and being expendable.

      Complains about being called expendable.

Uses only character there’s literally two of.

Haha yes. That may be true there are 2 Rikers, there’s only one Commander Riker.

      THANK YOU.

The joke about red shirts makes no effing sense any more. It hasn’t made sense in over thirty years. I’ve never watched TOS, I started with TNG a couple of years ago, and I remember thinking during the first season (as a new arrival to the fandom giving it an overdue watch) that the jokes I’d always heard about red shirts were confusing, because random deaths were not that common on the show. People died occasionally, but the trope of unnamed crew members being killed unceremoniously to convey stakes did not appear in TNG, and I couldn’t help but notice that captain Picard himself was wearing this supposedly cursed color.

It makes me so frustrated to see this lazy, lazy, lazy zombie joke that just won’t go away.

The red shirt part of the joke is referring to TOS exclusively because it was so prevalent. But really it’s a larger trope found across lots of different shows and genres. They may not wear red shirts but you’ll know them when you see them.

I think it’s a great joke and has stood the test of time. You should try watching TOS before proclaiming that the joke doesn’t work.

I don’t even care about the people who don’t know which series is which. The whole joke is a fallacy to begin with, and I wish people didn’t actually think it was true.

It always seemed like red shirts were most likely to die, but that’s only because the majority of crew members wore red. Statistically, gold shirts have a much higher fatality rate.

Is this before or after the comic where he defeated birth control to impregnate his wife without her consent?

I decided to look into some context for this comic. It was published September 21st, 2013. The artist later added this text to the post:

WARNING! THE FOLLOWING COMIC IS INSENSITIVE AND CAN BE VERY UPSETTING.

          HEY EVERYONE,

IN THE LAST YEAR I HAVE RECEIVED A LOT OF UPSET EMAILS ABOUT THIS COMIC. I HAVE BEEN VERY CONFLICTED ABOUT WHAT TO DO WITH IT. THE COMIC WAS MADE DURING A TIME WHEN I MYSELF WAS DEALING WITH MY OWN ANXIETY, DEPRESSION, AND TRAUMA FROM PAST ABUSE. HUMOUR AND CYNICISM BEING ONE OF THE ONLY STRATEGIES I KNEW HOW TO DEAL WITH SUCH THINGS. MANY OF THESE OLDER COMICS YOU WILL NOTICE HAVE A DARKER AND MEANER EDGE.

TIME HAS CHANGED THE COMIC AND ME. I’M STILL IMPERFECT AND I MAKE MISTAKES, BUT I AM WAY MORE EMPATHETIC AND KIND THAN I USED TO BE AND THAT IS REFLECTIVE IN THE COMIC NOW. THIS COMIC WHEN PLACED AGAINST MY CURRENT WORK IS VERY SHOCKING AND HURTFUL TO A LOT OF YOU AND I AM SORRY FOR THE PAIN THAT IT CAUSES. I WOULD NOT MAKE THIS KIND OF JOKE NOW, BUT IT IS PART OF THE ARC OF MY STORY. I AM LEAVING IT UP BECAUSE I BELIEVE IN BEING HONEST AND BEING HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR OUR MISTAKES. IT ALSO ALLOWS US TO HAVE HARD CONVERSATIONS WHICH ARE WHAT ULTIMATELY LEAD TO GROWTH.

I AM TRULY SORRY FOR THE HURT THIS COMIC CAUSES ANYONE. I NEVER THOUGHT AS A YOUNGER PERSON THAT A JOKE INVOLVING POKING A HOLE IN A CONDOM WITH A STAR WARS TOY WAS ASSUALT OR RAPE, ESPECIALLY SINCE THE ABUSE I SUFFERED SEEMED SO MUCH WORSE. I KNOW BETTER KNOW AND I AM SORRY.

I AM OPEN TO CONTINUING THIS CONVERSATION IF YOU WOULD LIKE or IF YOU JUST WANT TO VENT OR BE ANGRY WITH ME, THAT IS OK AS WELL. I WILL BE THERE TO LISTEN. HERE IS MY EMAIL: lunarbabooncomics@gmail.com

          All the best,

          CHRIS

So here’s my take: This comic is almost ten years old. The artist has already realized it was a mistake and apologized for it. Maybe OP wasn’t aware, as I was not, but now we both are, so let’s not stir shit any further.

          WTF.

          What the actual fuck. Christ.

Edit: someone shared a post where the creator was like, “My bad, that’s fucked up”, and that’s good enough for me.
