  • Makes sense. /Geneva?

You’re awesome! Dunno, I always paid for reddit because I got value from it and people need to live. I find this an interesting problem and opportunity to define new commons, but the time required to find a longterm solution may go beyond what you’re willing to invest alone.

“A DAO is a decentralized autonomous organization, a type of bottom-up entity structure with no central authority. Members of a DAO own tokens of the DAO, and members can vote on initiatives for the entity. Smart contracts are implemented for the DAO, and the code governing the DAO’s operations is publicly disclosed.” (Googled)

I think it’s super you’re doing this, but now it’s in your hands (vs reddit shareholders), for better or worse. The domain, hosting, effort, and liability(?). While we’re at it, we could exploit more new ideas including those for governance. I’m not sure how much I can contribute, my tech know how is limited.

  • It’s clear that change is overdue. Right now, the platform owners are the ones paying for everything, but they don’t create or control the content. The ones creating and controlling the content aren’t the platform owners. The people using the platform, including those using APIs, get value from it, but they don’t pay anything. App developers put in their time and money, and then get value back from the platform.

Ads help support the platform, but they don’t always line up with what the platform stands for. As time goes on, corporate imperatives are going to push harder to get more and more value from the platform, to the detriment of the other stakeholder.

An open source platform, with an OSI license, and a federated system is a good foundation. New methods, like DAOs and blockchains, could be used to govern and support the infrastructure. Smart contracts could be used to handle the exchange of value between apps, APIs, and the platform.

What started with Reddit could turn into something really cool. It could leverage the latest tech to make sure everyone involved gets their fair share.
