Is it justified to bump up the api pricing?
I think its fair to bump up the prices, especially with the background of AI-Training and Reddits large, free data collection. Even if 3-rd party apps will shut down. But the communication and organization was like beyond bad.
What will be the outcome?
Most lurkers, possibly 99% of users will stay. But the more editors and moderators exit from Reddit, the lower in value the posts get. I think the editors and moderators got pissed off the most. Only time will tell.

Yes, my last centralized social media was deleted and I moved on to the decentralized and/or federated universe.

I’ve took this as an opportunity to give the federated social sphere a chance because there were going to be a lot of folks doing the same and the chance to get something stable going was never going to better. In the beginning it was rough but I’m close to getting much of my entertainment needs fulfilled by the fediverse. I might really make this my new home and just go back to reddit for specific niches.
My hope is that the next time reddit pisses of the community, the fediverse will be in an even better place and more will decide to switch and stick with it.

I think so as well. Reddit is one of the biggest sites on the planet, it takes a lot to take down a giant.

I would like to see that as well, i think the fediverse already got a bunch of users more since the strike. Nice to see them give this federated universe a chance.
Reddit acts horrible right now. First they basically destroy third-party apps instead of making their own app better, then they threaten and replace moderators on their subs and just do whatever they want.
If Reddit were a country it would be a dictatorship with an idiot as its leader.
Personally I support the protest by just not visiting Reddit anymore, request my data and hopefully delete my account there.
In the end a lot of users will not care but I hope they are the ones that do not contribute to Reddit and just consume which would lead to a slow death for Reddit. And in the short term there hopefully is enough chaos and bad decisions to reach the press and hurt Reddit that way.
Many big companies learned, that it is very hard to go against the masses of users, but Reddit wants to find out themself.
Reddit was once a great platform, but suffered from capitalism and greed. It will stick around for a long time, but time will tell how invested users are in the future.
It’s clear that change is overdue. Right now, the platform owners are the ones paying for everything, but they don’t create or control the content. The ones creating and controlling the content aren’t the platform owners. The people using the platform, including those using APIs, get value from it, but they don’t pay anything. App developers put in their time and money, and then get value back from the platform.
Ads help support the platform, but they don’t always line up with what the platform stands for. As time goes on, corporate imperatives are going to push harder to get more and more value from the platform, to the detriment of the other stakeholder.
An open source platform, with an OSI license, and a federated system is a good foundation. New methods, like DAOs and blockchains, could be used to govern and support the infrastructure. Smart contracts could be used to handle the exchange of value between apps, APIs, and the platform.
What started with Reddit could turn into something really cool. It could leverage the latest tech to make sure everyone involved gets their fair share.
Interesting insights. I can imagine, that Reddit started something, they could hardly stop and would’ve needed a pretty big overhaul of things to work into such a way. I think, if Aaron Swartz was still around, the platform could’ve made a right turn some time ago. But greedy investors keep making pressure to make profit.

What would it need for you to switch to a different social network?
Not sure. I haven’t decided why I even use social media. I am a heavy data consumer, but I aspire to be content creator one day as I’ve dipped my toes… and ankles in topics difficult to digest. But I am uncomfortable with how I structure my ideas and how I communicate them. This is way I don’t really share my ideas online, both because of rigid and restrictive community rules and because of how people might react. At the same time, I am aware not all ideas I have are worthy for sharing. Perhaps lowering the friction in my communication with the network, coupled with my increased curiosity about what the network has to offer, could be the recipe for my new cake day.
