I don’t post here as much as I did on reddit, but if I had to compare the 2, this place is WAY nicer. I got into such a habit where I review what i type about 3 times just because I knew, on reddit the majority of the time, someone will immediately be hostile. On Lemmy? I’ve actually had way more responses that are productive or add to what I say, and I don’t mind replying back because of that.

The only issues I’ve had with Lemmy is lack of content compared to the other place.

That helps. I am going to try and review before I comment and or post. My issue is I reply impulsively at times and also post impulsively as well.

As an instance admin I get to see people’s deleted comments, they are just marked as deleted. Every time a post comes in like this I like to check a users history.

Yeah dude, you deserve the massive downvotes.

If you’re walking around town and smell shit everywhere you go, maybe you should check your shoe.

I think this logic is a little flawed. Say you’re a well educated and intellectually honest left-wing person who likes a good debate and goes to a place like Truth Social to engage with people that have opposing beliefs. This person is going to receive a ton of hate for their efforts. They’re going to “smell shit” everywhere. Doesn’t still mean they’re wrong.

This applies to Lemmy aswell. Certain topics simply just don’t get a good reception here because of the audience. The experience of using this platform is wildly different to someone who generally aligns with the “activist left” compared to someone whose closer to the centre.

Ye 😊👍 I think You got it. I am pretty left and I do tend to get flack for it.

I am also a bit of an outspoken atheist. I get flack for that too.

But I just don’t take any of it too personally. I try to be more of an observer than a reactor.

Yeah dude, you deserve the massive downvotes.

Why do You feel that way? What exactly do I deserve the downvotes for? Genuinely stumped/curious. 🤔

If you’re walking around town and smell shit everywhere you go, maybe you should check your shoe.

I don’t believe I have that problem; but thank You anyways.

From your comments you aren’t being outright rude, but you are stirring the pot. I didn’t feel offended, but you are being very flippant and uncaring about other people’s views, and demeaning people for having those views.

For example, if someone lays out an opinion that is thought provoking and they tried, one response would be

        Well, I don’t agree, but I understand.

The feeling I get from your responses are more like

        Lol yeah whatever dude

Which to me would be a downvote. If you want respect you have to give it first, even when you disagree.

Right on. I probably just need to find my communities rather then scroll through all.

I saw a highly upvoted post the other day about how a user would downvote all movie trailers because they considered them ads. A wild choice to make when you could just unsub from the movie communities? I think this is very much Lemmy’s brand of toxicity

Name any medium in which people can anonymously contribute, where toxicity isn’t present ‘sometimes’.

I feel like this applies to all social media. Why single out Lemmy? Do you feel it is more toxic than other social media sites? Do you have any examples of the type of toxicity you feel are most prevelant, along with where (community / instance)?

Lemmy has definite leanings that make it feel worse at times than even Reddit because Reddit had a larger percentage of casuals with differing opinions. Holding opinions contrary to the hive on here can make Lemmy feel pretty hostile, especially since people on Lemmy seem to love bringing those topics up as often as humanly possible.

Mostly comparing it to reddit… I feel in general that Lemmy is more toxic because I almost always see people get downvoted for no good reason. Sometimes there is no reply and or comment to why they’re downvoting the other person.

Still, I am sticking around 😭😔😁👍😛. Cause I super don’t like reddit banning me or others for no good reason.

Are you talking about posts/comments that get a few downvotes or overwhelmingly downvoted?

From what I’ve seen, getting a few random downvotes seems normal, and the posts/comments that are getting overwhelmingly downvoted are toxic

You might be onto something here. It’s like sometimes I hit a nerve or something and then I am thinking to myself; what/why? 🤔

I’m not sure why the downvotes unless…ah, that’s what you’re talking about. You did qualify it with sometimes. If people don’t agree that it sometimes is toxic, well, that’s just fucking wild.

Ehhh, maybe it’s like sports? Giving critique on said platform probably wasn’t the best idea.

Still I appreciate all the replies/comments; I think 🤔 I’ve learned a thing or two.
