I’m working my way through potting up a few hundred native shrubs, and planning to plant some of the smaller ones.

Cool! That’s a lot. I’m planting 5 oak trees in my local park. Not a ton but it’s a small park so that’s what I could find space for.

Yeah I’m definitely a quercophile. I have about 20 more I’m looking to plant somewhere but I haven’t figured out where yet…

💕 that’s rad! My general rule for transplanting the volunteer oaks is “wherever there isn’t one yet” but that can be tricky when space is limited

I live in the city and an arid climate. So there is little space where people wouldn’t object to a tree, and then on top of that it needs to be either on some kind of irrigation or in a place I can easily get water to. I have a few ideas but none are very convenient to access so I’m still hoping something better pops up.

Summer plantings can be a little tougher on things, especially if yours are hot or dry. Still, a good little rhyme to remember is that “first they grow roots, then the growth shoots”. If you’re concerned, though, you can always do a scratch test on an outermost branch to make sure there’s still green just below the bark.

Since it’s her first winter I’m letting it wake up. I was pretty good about watering over the fall, so I’m hopeful.
