In this case that is a mixture of two different hydrated salts. When the two come together the freezing point of both is lowered to a temperature which depends on the particular salts used and the ratio between them.     One thing to keep in mind which he didn’t mention is that these PCMs change volume slightly, thus sealing them in fixed containers is a bit problematic.

    But yes, these are very interesting and I have also been thinking of a nice thermal storage project with them. Putting a pack of higher temperature PCMs behind a basic wood stove for example might simulate the effect of a much more advanced thermal storage clay stove pretty well.

    I’m gonna have to give this a try. The one where he soaked a towel and sealed it in a bag to make a seat cooler is worth a few bucks for the supplies. That would be amazing to take camping.
