Both are pastes made of mashed beans (peanuts and chickpeas are beans.) They also have a similar nutrient profile and are both used for similar dishes.

    There’s way more garlic in my hummus

    I say tahini and peanut butter are the same thing because a tahini and jelly sandwich is pretty good.

    Peanut butter can be made solely with blended peanuts. Hummus is rarely, if ever ime, made with only blended chickpeas and also requires some oil/tahini for even the basic texture.

      I was under the impression that, by definition, blended chickpeas were only one ingredient in hummus.

      I thought in order to qualify as hummus it had to have blended chickpeas, tahini ( which is just blended sesame seeds, IIRC), oil, and lemon juice.

      Now that I think about it, tahini and peanut butter are fairly similar in texture and consistency.

      I wonder what Hummus with peanut butter would taste like.

      I also wonder what peanut butter with garlic, lemon and cumin would taste like.

            Ez thai peanut sauce recipe.

            Red curry paste or Panang curry paste, saute in pan. Pour in your coconut milk, dump too much peanut butter in usually crunchy and add salt/sugar to taste.

            10/10 ez n good

        Depends on how you season the peanut butter. Store bought peanut butter is often chock full of sugar to make it sweet.

        A plain peanut butter with just salt and peanuts goes extremely well with savory. Like on a burger.

        A beef bacon cheeseburger with something like havarti, with peanut butter on it is delicious.

        And a lamb burger with feta and hummus goes really well together.

    If you want to compare something to peanut butter, check out tahini. It’s basically peanut butter made out of sesame seeds, and even has a (kinda) similar flavor profile. Tahini and grape jam is delicious.

    Peanuts and chickpeas are both legumes, just like beans. Therefor I propose that PB&Js amd hummus on bread should all be classified under “Beans on Toast”

    Peanut butter usually has sugar in it, but it doesn’t have to. Peanuts can be great in savory dishes too, such as Thai peanut sauce. I eat peanut butter with celery and hot sauce.

      I am a peanut butter purist, so IMO real peanut butter is just crushed peanuts and maybe some salt. Anything else is just a peanut-flavored spread.

      Peanut butter with sugar in it is gross to me. I specifically look for it without any sugar in the ingredients. It doesn’t have to be sweet!

        My favorite is from those machines some grocery stores have that grind it up on the spot - nothing but peanut. Definitely shows the extra ingredients like sugars, oils etc in some jarred ones are totally superfluous. Kind of offensive, really, how some major brands remove the peanut oil and replace it with a cheaper oil.

          It’s not about expense, it’s about emulsification. Peanut oil can’t stay solid at room temperature and will separate from the solids. Trans fats are perfect for that so they used that for awhile, but that’s becoming illegal. Now they’ll use other more saturated fats.

            Sure… transfats also resist oxidation much longer, which is good for health in some ways - rancid oil is dramatically unhealthy to consume - but also it serves to help the manufacturer by extending shelf life. They do also sell the peanut oil, though.

        It tastes like… peanuts? What could be vile about it? I guess you could mix in some sugar and other oil if desired, since that’s really all other peanut butters have.

          It was the hot sauce. Some combination of something in the hot sauce flavor profile mixed with the celery and PB didn’t work for me. I like celery and PB, just not with hot sauces (I’ve tried a few over the years).

          Edit: I love peanut sauce in Thai food, if that’s what you were talking about

            I eat hot sauce on absolutely everything so it seemed really normal to me.

              Oh, fresh-ground PB can be kinda “blah” for me. Also the constant need to mix it because it settles… I prefer the sugary, processed stuff! Although, at least I’m a crunchy guy!

              Hot sauce, on the other hand, I like, but not on everything, lol

      No, but they are related. They differ because only hummus and peanut butter are used as condiments/dip as opposed to being eaten alone.

        PB straight up is a great snack. They even sell little packets of peanut butter to be eaten by itself out here. I’ve also been known to eat the left over hummus with a spoon after all my pita chips are gone.

        Bean dip or eating refried beans with chips or tortillas is not unusual at all. In fact, dipping tortilla in beans is basically eating hummus with pita.

        If you have never hung around with my cousin, you might think that. But I’ve seen him get stoned as fuck and sit there finger-spooning either hummus or peanut butter into his gaping maw while washing them down with Dr Pepper. Sometimes he changes things up and uses RC cola.

        I suspect, when I show him this, he’ll take it as a challenge and try both at the same time.
