The former president has deployed increasingly aggressive talk about electric vehicles and their effect on the American economy.

“Because his speech was so disjointed it makes it difficult to know if he was threatening the U.A.W. workers, the U.S. auto manufacturers, or the nation as a whole,” Ms. Mercieca said. But, she added, “In a sense, it doesn’t matter because Trump was threatening all at once.”

    The thing is, he’s not threatening anyone directly, he’s saying “bad things will happen” to rile up his base. The “bloodbath” here is obviously the US auto companies getting wrecked because their EVs aren’t as good and demand is drying up generally.

    But the intent of Trump’s speech isn’t to warn of economic failure if he doesn’t get elected, it’s to piss off his base so they come out and vote for him in November, and violent rhetoric seems to be what works. And hey, if some subset of his base decides to commit actual political violence and take out his competitor, all the better for him.

    It’s distasteful at best, and we should really stop boosting this nonsense.
