The aftermath of the Russian Revolution was a chaotic and bloody time – from 1917 until 1922, civil war consumed the former Russian Empire, as competing factions vied for power. One of the lesser known participants was a movement of Anarcho-communists who came to exert control over vast areas of southern Ukraine, led by a man named Nestor Makhno. This Ukrainian revolutionary, born into a family of peasants, earned himself a legendary reputation - fighting against the Central Powers, the Bolsheviks and the White Army in a bid to create an anarchist society in Southern Ukraine. Interestingly Makhno is also credited with inventing the Tachanka, the horse drawn gun carriage used extensively on the plains of the Eurasian steppe.     A bit of a shame that he isn’t better known in Ukraine itself. In the western parts you can see red and black flags quite often, but sadly they do not refer to Anarchism at all, but rather to the Nazi collaborator Bandera.

        Maybe you know, or maybe you might have better luck in finding…? But I remember several years ago reading about a woman that was part of the organizational structure of Mahkno’s Free Territory. The specifics are alluding me, but I remember her story being of a complete and utter fucking badass. It might have been a series of screenshots from Tumblr possibly? I tried digging around earlier today for it but came up short. I would really love to read it again tho
