    This makes me a little nervous, just because I would so rather this be a public project, But I can’t bring myself to be picky: I want to see this rail succeed, along side the California High Speed rail project, so that people see how transformative this can be.

    The Brightline West project is supposed to begin service in 2027, and the California High Speed Rail line is supposed to begin service between two largely unremarkable towns in northern and southern California in 2029. Presumably, By 2040 one should be able to take a train at high speed from San Francisco to Los Vegas. I just wish this wasn’t a generational project. I can’t believe it takes this long.

      Honestly San Jose - Merced is the key line in California HSR working. With the ones already under construction, that would allow tech workers in the Silicon Valley to commute with HSR to Silicon Valley from the Central Valley. Currently housing prices are crazy in Silicon Valley and combined with work from home, that would be a really popular service.

        I really wish that they’d just started building from LA to Bakersfield and San Jose to Merced, and then opened those before building the track in the middle.

        It seems obvious to me that seeing the project run and discovering how useful it is will radically change people’s impressions and its political capital. If it were useful quickly and then got more useful as the project went on, there’d be so much more support for it. Doing it this way seems so bone-headed if you wanted people to support the project that I have to wonder if it was intentional.
