Honestly San Jose - Merced is the key line in California HSR working. With the ones already under construction, that would allow tech workers in the Silicon Valley to commute with HSR to Silicon Valley from the Central Valley. Currently housing prices are crazy in Silicon Valley and combined with work from home, that would be a really popular service.
I really wish that they’d just started building from LA to Bakersfield and San Jose to Merced, and then opened those before building the track in the middle.
It seems obvious to me that seeing the project run and discovering how useful it is will radically change people’s impressions and its political capital. If it were useful quickly and then got more useful as the project went on, there’d be so much more support for it. Doing it this way seems so bone-headed if you wanted people to support the project that I have to wonder if it was intentional.
